POWERMAX · HORIZON EUROPE PROJECT · 2026-2030
Maximizing Cross-Grid Integration and Optimization of Long Duration Energy Storage to synergize Revenue Streams
PowerMAX is an international collaboration of 24 partners across Europe and the Americas working to accelerate long-duration energy storage by integrating multiple technologies, open-source tools, and real-world demonstrators. Over 2026–2030, the project will develop advanced modelling systems to show how hydrogen, molten salt, and Li-ion storage can strengthen renewable-based power grids, improve flexibility, and support a secure, decarbonised European energy system.

THREE TECHNOLOGIES, ONE SYSTEM
Long-duration storage, built for every grid
PowerMAX integrates hydrogen, molten salt and lithium-ion storage into one modelling and revenue-stacking framework, tested across real demonstrators.
Green hydrogen storage
PEM electrolysis and green hydrogen production paired with grid services, from Modena's Hydrogen Valley to cross-regional roll-out.
Molten-salt thermal storage
Two-tank molten-salt CSP storage, proven at Gemasolar with 15+ hours of dispatchable, round-the-clock renewable power.
Lithium-ion battery storage
Fast-responding batteries stacked with EV charging and PV canopies, buffering peak load without costly grid upgrades.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Maximising the value of long-duration storage
Bringing together 24 partners from 11 countries in Europe, North America, and South America, PowerMAX aims to maximise long-duration energy storage (LDES) value by integrating diverse LDES technologies, open-source tools, and real-world demonstrators to enable revenue stacking, de-risk investments, and accelerate global, cross-regional renewable-based power systems.
PowerMAX focuses on three LDES technologies — hydrogen, molten salt and lithium-ion batteries — with demonstrators in European power grids and uptake cases in the Americas. With a budget of €8M and a duration spanning from June 2026 to May 2030, PowerMAX will develop a suite of modelling tools that combine high-resolution market simulation, grid expansion analysis, and techno-economic optimisation of storage technologies.
These tools are designed to represent multiple market timeframes and evaluate how LDES contributes to flexibility, system adequacy, and resilience — accelerating the transition toward a secure, decarbonised and future-proof European energy system. More information on the project is coming out soon.
